Seaside Village - Lanyu

We are just back from an amazing several days in this tiny town on Orchid island, home of the Yami tribe who have for centuries made their livelihood from the sea.

The hand carved and painted boats are legendary, as is the testosterone filled boat-launching ceremony, during which the village men will throw the boats in the air, then cast them to sea in hopes of a great season of flying fish catches.

I really hate that we only had two days on the island. There are some absolutely awesome documentary pictures there, but that requires serious time and trust on the part of the Yami people who are very wary of tourists. These and the next few I post about Lanyu only scratch the surface. . .
